Swim safe programme reaches 59,000 children in nine months!

Nearly 60,000 children are safer in and around water thanks to a new swim safe programme launched just nine months ago.  Since its launch in October 2010, the State Kiwi Swim Safe programme has reached 59,298 children, trained 2680 school teachers and provided follow-up poolside support to 1233 teachers.

The goal of the Swimming New Zealand programme is to keep children safer in and around water.

"If we can lower the drowning toll through our education programme in primary and intermediate schools, we will be succeeding in our commitment to New Zealand communities," said Swimming New Zealand national learn to swim manager for schools Belinda Galley.

Keep up the good work Swimming NZ of education our children!

Lawn Bowls On Ice.....it has been reported that curling is a fast-growing winter sport in NZ!

Curling in New Zealand was established in 1873, when Scottish immigrant Thomas Callender, the "father of New Zealand curling", formed the Dunedin curling club.  The are few indoor clubs around New Zealand and you can witness this sport outdoors held amongst stunning backdrops.

One of those outdoor spots is Mt Olympus, with a small alpine tarn at 1800 metres that provides reliable ice for most of the ski season, complete with a natural grandstand for spectators.  Mt Olympus is only two hours from Christchurch, situated at the south end of the Craigieburn range.

Mt Olympus has a social curling competition happening on the weekend of 10th and 11th of September 2011 and invites Cantabrians to take part in this very sociable winter recreational activity.

Check out more information from Mt Olympus Skifield.

You may be able to fit in a cheeky ski or snowboard session while you are there.

Curl Up!

Did you know curling is a sport without judges?

  • Curling is a Olympic sport founded by Scots in the 1540's
  • Although the stones do curl, the term “curling” is derived from the old verb curr (grumble) because of the noise the stones make on the ice.
  • Curling is a game of etiquette - a game is always preceded by a handshake and the expression "Good Curling".

Refuel
Take a nap – you know you want to!  There are many experts who promote that a quick snooze during the day can revitalise your flagging energy levels.  Most of us feel it might be a good idea but why aren’t we taking naps?  Do we think that taking a nap is being lazy or are we just too busy to stop?  The following points may help convince you to give it a try.
  1. Operating on a full tank of gas - apparently the brain needs to refuel every now and then – it can be refuelled and at its peak with just a 20 minute power nap!
  2. A quick snooze brings relaxation  - energy research found that stress hormone levels were lower in those who took stress-reducing actions such as napping.
  3. Get motivated to exercise - sufficient sleep and naps help motivate you to exercise!
  4. Better health - Napping in general benefits heart functions, hormonal maintenance, and cell repair.  A power nap can maximizes these benefits by getting the sleeper into and out of rejuvenating sleep as fast as possible.
Getting the perfect nap
  1. The micro-nap: two to five minutes - shown to be surprisingly effective at shedding sleepiness.
  2. The mini-nap: five to 20 minutes - increases alertness, stamina, motor learning, and motor performance.
  3. The power-nap: 20 minutes - improves muscle memory and clears the brain of useless built-up information, which helps with long-term memory.
  4. The lazy man’s nap: 50 to 90 minutes - includes slow-wave plus REM sleep; good for improving perceptual processing; also when the system is flooded with human growth hormone, great for repairing bones and muscles.

Zzzz Up!

Napping Tips!

  • Try to nap in the morning or just after lunch; late afternoons you are more likely time to fall into deep sleep, which will leave you groggy.
  • Avoid large quantities of caffeine as well as foods that are heavy in fat and sugar.
  • Try to darken your nap zone, or wear an eye-shade. Darkness stimulates melatonin, the sleep- inducing hormone.
  • Remember that body temperature drops when you fall asleep. Raise the room temperature or use a blanket.
Famous nappers have included Bill Clinton, Lance Armstrong, Leonardo da Vinci and Thomas Edison.
Recovery
Have you heard about using light to repair and restore the body to its natural state after those lumps and bumps we get being outdoors?

The Bioptron Light Therapy System is a light therapy device that emits light which is similar to the part of the electromagnetic spectrum produced naturally by the sun but with no UV radiation.

Bioptron Light Therapy can help by stimulating the body to release its own healing potential. Once delivered to the tissues, the light energy promotes natural body functions.

Bioptron technology became widely used and accepted in medicine as a user-friendly, effective, non-pharmacological medical device. In over 15 years of clinical research worldwide, it has been shown to be supportive in helping with the following areas;
  • Promote wound healing after traumas, burns
  • Relief pain and decrease its intensity for areas like back and neck pain
  • In dermatological disorders and skin problems like acne
Need more information?  Want to give it a try?  The Bioptron team will be at the Expo this year and welcome all those who suffering from aching feet or brain drain to visit them at the stand for a FREE energy boost or foot relief!

Did you know different colours of light benefits different parts of the body?

  • Green - calming the nervous system,  irritability and insomnia
  • Blue - reduces blood pressure, anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxing effects.
  • Red - is used to energise and stimulate
  • Yellow - increases neuromuscular tone, helps digestion, and has a cleansing effect

Results
Steve Gurney gets results and he understands the key building blocks that need to be implemented in order to achieve amazing results.  He shares some of his wisdom with you....

Locus of Control – Steve explains that this is just one model to help us understand the results we get in our lives. Locus of control describes the extent to which we believe that we can control events that affect us.  Looking at both ends of the continuum – those with a high external locus of control believe that circumstances or fate determines their life, i.e. forces beyond his or her control.  Those with a high internal locus of control believe that events result primarily from their own input and effort.

And where we sit on the continuum can determine our state of mind and how we feel, our attitude, behaviour to situations, our physiology and our ability to take action towards our goals.  The more we feel that we have a choice the about what we do or achieve the more likely we will set goals and achieve them.

If you have a high internal locus of control you will have a tendency to work hard to improve your skills and knowledge base to help you strive for achieving your goals.

What is your locus of control?  What factors are responsible for your successes and failures? Are there some areas in your life where your sit more in the internal or external field than others?   Steve is fascinated by the locus of control and suggests googling Locus of Control and participating in some of the free online tests to see which end of the continuum you are!

The great news is that being aware of this gives us the ability to learn new responses and shift our position on the continuum. Once you begin to understand what your natural tendencies are, you can then find a ways to adapt to the situations you are faced with – this will help your personal development which in the end will affect your results!

Do you want to rev up your results?  Visit Steve’s website or take a look at NLP Christchurch

The Orbit kids boot

When fitting kids with boots - if your child is still in the growth stage, allow about half of a size for eventual growth. Boots that are too big will not give proper support. They can also cause painful blisters.
Recycle
We have six tips to help you to think green when camping!
  1. Camp Seconds -how many times a year do you go camping?  Unless it is a regular occurrence, think about buying pre-loved camping gear.  Also donate or sell your old gear.
  2. Be Water Conscious and keep our waters clean! They are a major source of fun in NZ and we use them for fun like swimming and kayaking.  We need to keep our waste out of the water - if there isn’t toilet facilities where you are camping dig a shallow hole in the ground making sure its well away from water courses and where others will not discover it.
  3. Recharge Those Torches - are you powering them with rechargeable recycle batteries or did you know there are a large range of solar technology torches?
  4. Stay on the Track when walking instead of being a trailblazer, follow signs and the beaten path. Travelling off the track leads to soil erosion and the trampling of native plant life. Also avoid the temptation to throw rocks and remove brush while you’re on the trail.
  5. Don’t Be a Pampered Camper and have a ’Taranaki Shower’ as a substitute for a daily shower - wash your face and use extra deodorant.  If you decide to clean up in a natural body of water, avoid using soap because it may harm the aquatic life.
  6. Take Out Your Recyclables a cold brew tastes nice around the campfire so keep in mind you can recycle the glass bottle or can it comes in. The same goes for cardboard boxes. Do a quick sweep once you’re packed up for any waste, whether it’s yours or not.
Tell us on Facebook how you Recycle in your adventures and why!
Recruit
We salute all those volunteers who help out with the kids sports!

SPARC estimate there are 41,000 people paid that work in sport in New Zealand, but 500,000 people are working unpaid.

There volunteers work in the realm of being coaches, umpires, referees and other types of officials.  You also recognise the volunteers who perform a range of duties like washing the uniforms, providing snacks and providing transport of teams.

Without those grassroot helpers many of the sporting activities simply wouldn’t happen.  Volunteers help build world-class sports people.

Could you lend your expertise to help the next sporting great?  The SPARC website has information about why and how to become volunteer.

How to get that beloved tent back into its bag!

After an amazing camping or tramping experience packing up the tent can become frustrating, it’s as if the bag is somehow shrunk overnight – we have a few tips to help make this task a breeze.
  • Check out how the tent is packed before you get your campsite – look how the bag is organized, see how it’s all packed in.  Take your time with this process and commit it to memory to avoid inventing a newer, untested method.
  • Follow the instructions - some tent manufacturers will have information on how to best repack your tent.  Study the instruction manual if one is included and commit the section on repacking to memory. You'll thank yourself later.
  • Take your time and be patient! If you rush the process you could leave behind important tent components.  As you disassemble your tent, keep things organized and keep a count of how many pegs and poles your tent. You could put the loose items in the tent bag first, before the body of the tent. Although some would argue it's best to fold or roll your tent then fit it into the bag, a lesser known technique is to stuff. That's right. Slowly fitting the tent into the tent bag can allow for the entire space of the bag to be used while snugly fitting the bag's contours. An awkwardly folded or rolled tent will likely not fit well in its bag.
  • If all else fails you could buy or borrow a bigger bag! There is no shame if you don’t have the packing gem.  You don’t want to turn a relaxing camping event into a ‘never again’ experience!  Think about the possibility of a canvas bag as it is durable and will protect the tent fabric from sharp objects like the firewood axe.
  • Celebrate your success!

Reflect

The “Rule of Thirds” helps you achieve well balanced and interesting photos.

Imagine breaking an image down into thirds so that you have 9 parts. With this grid in mind the ‘rule of thirds’ now identifies four important parts of the image that you should consider placing points of interest in as you frame your image.

rule_of_thirds.jpg

By placing objects over these intersections, a pleasing and balanced arrangement often results, whether the composition is horizontal or vertical.

Select a camera angle where the natural lines of the scene lead the viewers' eyes into the picture and toward your main center of interest.

You can often find the right line by moving around and choosing an appropriate angle.

Basically if you avoid placing your subject in that center square, you would have achieved the rule of thirds.
