Saving Lives At Sea! The Coastguard Southern Region has over 320 volunteers who provide NZ primary marine search and rescue service. They are the first port of call when people get into difficulties on the water. Last year the volunteers gave 48,765 hours of time to make sure that local boaties and other water users can enjoy our magnificent coastline and waterways that we have, secure in the knowledge that should anything go wrong Coastguard will be there to help.
It takes time, dedication and training to be part of an effective team that saves lives. These lovers of water can be called upon anytime during the day or night to aid rescue. Sometimes facing the most adverse sea conditions and being challenged both physically and mentally.
Well, we say good-on-you-mate to all the Coastguard volunteers; you’re doing a great job!
We are delighted the NZ Coastguard will be at the Expo highlighting the work volunteers perform and educate the public on key boating safety messages. |

Refuel
Drink Up.....it is winter! Interestingly it's not only during the summer months that we are in danger of becoming dehydrated. We are just as susceptible to dehydration during the winter months.
When it's cold in the winter months we lose the urge keep up our fluid intake, it’s just too cold to drink water. During summer we have the heat of the day to remind us of our thirst.
Your movements in the cold may not cause you to sweat – but your breath still allows water vapour to escape (that’s the steam you see streaming from your mouth when it’s cold). On the other hand our bodies tend to work harder due to the weight of extra clothing, and when we do sweat it tends to evaporate quickly in cold, dry air.
We are well aware that low fluid intake can cause dehydration which can impair your performance but it can also make your body more susceptible to common colds and flu. So don’t forget to drink up in winter with these tips;
-
Warm your water – it makes you feel warmer if it is above freezing
-
Remember caffeine and alcohol are diuretics and will flush water out of your system
-
Hydrate well before you start your activity
-
Drink even before signs of thirst appear
-
A hot cup of water with lemon, or a nice herbal tea adds to you daily hydration intake
-
Eating fresh fruits and veggies also provides us with hydration.

Interesting.....
-
A human is about 67% water
-
A chicken is about 75% water
-
Human blood is about 79% water
-
Human teeth contain about 10% water
-
Losing 4 to 5 percent of your body’s water makes your work performance drop by 20 to 30 percent
-
Water absorbs shock to vital organs in the human body

Recovery
We don’t talk about them too often – but we all have experienced and had to recover from them at some point....BLISTERS!
Blisters can be very painful and distracting, they can disrupt your adventure. Moisture and constant friction are the common factors for blisters that softens/weakens outer skin layers.
Here are a few tips to help recover from blisters;
-
Try not to burst the blister - let it heal on its own
-
Ensure the blister and surrounding area clean
-
Cover the blister with a soft dressing if it is in an area that may get bumped or rubbed during the day
-
If the blister breaks, press the area to get rid of all the fluid. Then, wash it with mild soap and warm water, or coat it with an antiseptic
-
Consult a doctor if there is an increase in redness around the blister, swelling, or pus as these are signs of infection
However it is prevention that is the best medicine;
-
What are you wearing on your feet - good socks and shoes pay a big role in avoiding blisters
-
Pre-tape sensitive areas before your trip
-
Ensure the insoles of your shoes dry out between use
-
Use moisturiser often on your feet, and massage them regularly. If you are kind to your feet, they will be kind to you!

Feet Up!

Choosing the right socks can help reduce friction.
-
Wearing two socks can reduce friction
-
Wearing polypropylene or other synthetic wicking fabrics that remove moisture
-
Avoid tube socks as their loose fit will cause rubbing
-
Avoid cotton as it absorbs moisture and can be more abrasive than other fabrics
-
Avoid socks with holes as they will provide extra friction

Stop and smell the flowers!
A tip when photographing delicate small elements like flowers is to frame it carefully and look at the light. Try isolating the small subject against a darker background, e.g. a flower bathed in sunshine in front of a shaded rock. This will help your subject stand out and really come to life.

Karen Hamilton shares her photography skill with us.

Help for back country exploration!
The Black Diamond Covert Avalung Pack is designed to help avert avalanche fatalities that happen with back country exploration. Most of the fatalities that occur are due to suffocation under the snow and this is where the Avalung comes in.
The Avalung works a bit like a scuba regulator and you can breathe under the snow until you are rescued. The cool part is that you don't have to have a tank of air slipped into your pack - the Avalung extracts breathable air from the snow, allowing you to breathe almost indefinitely.
Check out this video on how to use the Avalung.

How to extend the lifetime of your outdoor gear?
Firstly when you buy good quality gear it should last you a long time. When you follow the care guidelines provided by the manufacturer, this will help preserve the integrity of the gear. Also opting for repairs can extend the lifetime even further.
But what happens when you want the latest gear or you are just tired of the colour – what do you do with it?
Well, in NZ you have options - you can donate it or sell your gear to other enthusiasts. But what if it is on its last legs – can it be recycled? In NZ.....don't think so.
However, overseas there are outdoor companies leading the sustainable charge by recycling their own products. Companies like Patagonia and GoLite encourage consumers to send back their old gear and it will be recycled into brand new products.....and in some cases combine the old gear with other products like discarded water bottles therefore doubling the recycling efforts!
As kiwis we can be an inventive bunch - so...what can we do to recycle our outdoor gear?

Repack
Are you packing....to keep thirst at bay?
Choosing the right hydration system to fit your needs is extremely important. A hydration pack can extend your adventures and they are perfect for mountain bikers, hikers, runners, skiers, backpackers, cyclists, walkers or anyone who needs plenty of water on the go.
What do you need to think about when choosing a hydration system for you?
Antibacterial bladder material. This feature ensures water isn't off-tasting if any is left in the pack for a long amount of time.
Breathability of your backpack Airflow across your back is important for your comfort. You need to reduce the amount of surface area that directly connects to your back and allows your body to get rid of moisture build up a little more easily.
Large shoulder straps. The larger the strap then the more surface area there is between the strap and the shoulder. Smaller straps tend to dig into your shoulders, especially if you have quite a bit of weight in them.
Do you need extra pockets in the backpack? What you need to carry with you will determine the size or type of pack you need.
Do you need a hip belt? A hip belt on packs allows you to focus most of the weight on your hips like traditional backpacks. Ideal if you are planning to carry large amounts of water and other essentials.
Fit is important.
A pack closer to your body is better for you with the bladder compartment placed in the compartment next to your back to help keep the weight balanced.
