Respect

Hats off to the hundreds of women who made the journey from brunch riders to bunch riders last weekend... Making the decision to take your bike riding to the next level requires commitment, some training and the determination to keep riding when obstacles appear – and they will... but the feeling when you finish will be worth it!

Recreational cycling events are popping up all over the country, presenting men and women with the opportunity to challenge themselves... and their mates!  Girls on Bikes, a cycling event exclusively for women held at Methven this month saw an awesome turnout, despite the cold wet weather; many personal goals were achieved.

So congratulations to everyone who has achieved their own personal cycling goal... we respect you!

Recreate

The old proverb of every adventure starts with one step is still true!  And every adventurer needs to take a certain amount of 'stuff' with them; whether it’s equipment for an overnight tramp or water and warmth for a quick walk – you need a bag.

Cactus Climbing understands this and have a wide range of packs and bags to meet all your adventure needs.  For example their Zero pack will support you on your mountain bike day trips, when trail running in the hills, or everyday urban existence.

The Zero pack is an ultra light streamlined solution; you hardly know you’re wearing it until you need it, and even so, it will consume just about anything you throw at it.

Pack Up!

Many wise trampers suggest buying a new pack. Despite the hundreds of offers from friends and the temptation to save a few dollars it is worth the investment of having a pack that is fitted to your back and shape and one you know is yours.

Retreat

What is a must do for kiwis? Have you been to the third Island of New Zealand?

Stewart Island and Rakiura National Park are Southland’s jewel. The island is home to many native birds, including the country’s icon, the Kiwi. Catching a glimpse of this rare nocturnal bird is a magical experience.  Rakiura means “glowing skies” in Maori – an apt name for a place where visitors will have breathtaking views of the heavens. The waters are startlingly clear and offer great opportunities to snorkel, dive or kayak.  The small township of Oban sits perched among the native bush, and offers a wide variety of accommodation and activities.

We are excited to announce that Venture Southland will be at the Expo this year showcasing the Southland region.

Look Up!

Stewart Island is 64 km long, 40 km across, with 700 km coastline, but only 20 km of roads!

Recovery
Feel the burn! The methods to promote recovery from post-excecise pain is a hot topic.  A large number today's population are turning to compression gear to help soothe their aches and pains.

Even though compression clothing can be described as highly scientific sport technology, it had humble beginnings over 50 years ago in the medial areana; improving symptoms related to diabetes, edema (swelling) and vein disorders, etc.

Compression stockings were invented by Conrad Jobst, suffering from a venous condition and in an attempt to resolve his problem he discovered that gradient compression stockings can actually help reduce the pain!

Today's garments are designed to promote faster recovery by reducing muscle fatigue caused by lactic acid and reduce exercise induced muscle damage.  Not forgetting they look good too!

Be sure this is only the begining for compression gear; the industry strives to make them stronger, faster and better....for you!!!

SKINS compression clothing increases circulation, transporting oxygen to your muscles faster and improving the lactate shuttle - for a faster recovery. RY400 garments take into account compression requirements of passive, relaxing muscles.

SKINS have created products for general sports, cycling, gols, snow, triathlon and recovery.

Results

So, you’ve taken the first step; written your clearly defined and quantifiable fitness goal.  So, what’s next?

The next step is to create a plan of how you will accomplish your goal by writing down all the things you need to do to accomplish your goal; then schedule it.

For example...if your goal is to lose 10kg by November 2011 then part of your plan would need to include a workout schedule.  Let’s say you decided to work out four times a week with a fun activity of your choice.  Depending on your commitments you may decide to workout at the gym on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6:00 pm and go for a two-hour hike every Saturday morning.   Once again, write this schedule down and put it somewhere you see it.

Sometimes it will be important to plan what things you will need to have with you, not just what you will be doing.  Making a workout plan is useless if you don’t do laundry on Sunday so that your workout clothes are clean.

Keep visualising positive results, stick to your plan and start seeing the results!

Reflect

When travelling with a digital camera think about taking several smaller memory cards instead of one with a huge capacity: this diminishes the chance of losing all your photos if something happens to your card.

Replay

When all your efforts fail in the outdoors there is a gadget that could be your lifeline.

The Personal Locator Beacon (PLB ) is a small, emergency distress beacon that emits a UHF radio signal.  When activated this signal is picked up by satellite and/or aircraft, and an alert message is relayed to the Rescue Coordination Centre of New Zealand (RCCNZ) to facilitate a rescue.

Here is why Mapworld have recommended the use of the FastFind 211 mini as a PLB.

1. It transmits two signals simultaneously, one to the subscription free global 406 MHz satellite system, and the other (121.5MHz) is to speed up the local recovery response process.
2. Once activated, FAST FIND's signals will continue to transmit for at least 24 hours, at a powerful 5 watt output, the 406 MHz transmission ensures that a call for help gets through whatever the conditions.
3. A test function button.
4. It is compact and lightweight.

Recycle

Did you know that in the US over 60 billion water bottles are sold each year?  Unfortunately only a portion of those are recycled each year.

However, when recycled, bottles provide an environmentally friendly source for making new products and substitutes recycled materials for new plastic.  They are made into hundreds of everyday products, including fleece jackets, sleeping bag filling and lumber for outdoor decking.

Our Suggestion:  Recycle more plastic and reduce purchases of water bottles.

Slow Up!

Click on the water bottle to check out a video that explains how much oil it takes to produce new water bottles.

Repack

Need a tip on how to pack your pack for travelling or tramping? Many tips have been complied over the years and after Vicky’s recent trip to Vietnam this is her tip favourite to share.

Pack everything in clear plastic bags (preferably zip lock), one plastic bag for each type of clothing e.g. t-shirts, underwear, shorts, etc, before packing your backpack.

When you unpack your backpack you just take out a series of bags and you can see immediately what you want - no rumaging!!! To repack is so easy and everything remains tidy.  Be sure not to leave your plastic bags lying around if you are travelling in nature!

Tell us on Facebook what your favourite packing tip is and why!
