Our Strong Christchurch! The Recreation Expo team are proud to be part of the Christchurch community. The last month has been filled with so many emotions; uncertainty in what the future holds, followed by optimism at the prospect of what is possible as we rebuild our city, heartbreak and loss, followed by courageous stories of survival and the generosity of strangers. But what has stood out the most is the passion of our people to help each other and the reminder that friends and family make the world go round - not money or material things! So as you move forward in your journey remember to make time for the people in your life and make time for recreation; enjoy it alone to clear your mind or with others to share life - either way Get Out There Christchurch... we respect you!!

We love the kiwi ingenuity behind the world's best stand up paddleboard... Red Air!

Over the summer months you will have no doubt seen people riding stand-up paddleboards; in the surf, on the lake or in the river - this sport is fast becoming a favourite for families and adventure seekers. There are of course several brands available in the marketplace but the Recreation Expo team recommend the Red Air boards available from the NZ Paddle Company - and here's why!

  1. They are the toughest paddleboards on the market; you can literally bounce them over rocks and debris without being worried about them ripping and deflating!
  2. They inflate to high pressure within 3-4 minutes using a hand pump; fully inflated they rival even a solid board.
  3. They are incredibly versatile; they are suitable for cruising, racing, surfing (big & small waves), kite surfing, river running, kayaking, fishing & family fun!
  4. They roll-up and store away in a bag when not in use; perfect for the car, boat or campervan.
  5. They have been developed using Kiwi riders, in Kiwi conditions, so you know they will be perfect for your Kiwi adventure.
We are delighted that these great Red Air paddleboards will be available again this year from the NZ Paddle Company stand at the Expo!!

Eating right is the secret to keeping your energy levels up so your adventures can last longer... nutritional bars, energy gels and the likes are great when you are on the go but when you stop to enjoy the view the tummy craves something more substantial. The Recreation Expo team love to dine on Back Country Cuisine when they are camping and tramping!

Made from real food products the Back Country Cuisine range of freeze dried meals are delicious and nutritious! The range is extensive so there is something for all tastes - even a dessert range if you really want to treat yourself!

The freeze-dried process makes the meals lightweight, so you don't have to lug heavy cans of food with you and it also gives food a long shelf life, making these meals the perfect addition to your tramping and camping pack.

We are excited to announce that Back Country Foods will be returning to the Expo again this year!

Recovery

Are you to cool to stretch? Making sure that you have an adequate recovery plan is essential to reducing post-exercise pain and it ensures that you are able to bounce-back quickly.

Exercise will cause the muscles you work to tighten up, so it is important to spend some time stretching muscles back to their resting length. Recovery stretching promotes the circulation of cleansing blood through the entire length of the muscles. It helps to minimise loss of flexibility following repeated exercise and - very importantly - it reduces the muscle soreness you may experience in the two days following your adventure.

No matter what the adventure if you are upright and using your arms you will experience some fatigue and tightening of the muscles in your neck and triceps - the amount depends on how hard and how long you push yourself ... so do some recovery stretches for these muscles!

Do you have a fitness goal? Getting results is about taking action and having a clearly defined goal.

Establishing a fitness goals is the first step towards achieving it. And being specific about what you want is the secret to success. Does this sound like you? ... "I want to lose weight so I can keep up with the kids". While this is a great goal and one that is well worth achieving, you may find that it is hard for you to make any progress because it is not specific enough.

Try restating your goal with quantifiable details - how much weight do you want to lose? Over what period of time? What activity will you enjoy with the kids once you have achieved your goal? Knowing this information makes you accountable and helps you to create a positive visual image of yourself celebrating your success with your kids ... make sure you visualise this 'happy place' everyday and you will start to see results!

Capture the action of your adventures with a fast shutter speed; take lots of photos and delete the ones you don't want later. Use your view-finder instead of the LCD screen to compose photos, as this will allow your camera to capture more frames over a shorter period of time, by removing the time needed to show the review after each shot!

Going away?  Want to get more use out of your chilly bin?  Here are 3 top tips we have found to share.
1. Have two chilly bins; one for storage to be opened only once per day and the other for frequent use items.
2. Wrap frozen meat tight in paper and place into a rubbish bag that goes onto a bed of ice. Then another bag of ice is scattered on top. The meat stays really chilled and will take up to 3 days to thaw.
3. If you can source flake ice it is far better than frozen water blocks as it packs firm around the food packs and lasts longer.

Tell us on Facebook what your favourite packing tip is and why!
